Bestiaries have much to tell us about the medieval writers who compiled them, the monks who copied them, and the readers who had to imagine these exotic fictions of nature. This gorgeously illustrated medieval collection of tales is filled with descriptions of creatures that include religious allegories based upon their phantasmagorical appearances and peculiar behaviors. Through this lively menagerie, we are able to translate universals that span medieval and modern views of the natural world.
